Azrael, the angel of death is perpetually bright, upbeat, charming and well…angelic. She goes about her daily schedule of releasing mortals from their earthly bonds and bringing them to the underworld where they are met by Kharon, the Ferryman…a large, imposing, androgynous ABSOLUTELY fabulous individual who simply stated, takes no crap. Kharon is tasked to carry souls, for a fare, across the river of the underworld or to banish them to wander aimlessly for eternity

Following a particularly busy afternoon, Kharon announces that he’s (?) bored with the repetition and perceived monotony of his job. Azrael tries to convince him that it’s simply a passing phase, but Kharon is determined that quitting is the solution. Azrael informs him however that the only way he can quit is if he can find someone to dispatch him. And so begins Kharon’s quest to relinquish the title of Ferryman

As Azrael goes about her mission as the (grim) reaper, she brings candidates to Kharon, but none of them are up to the task, so to speak. As the story unfolds themes of life, death, religion, pointlessness, self-discovery and persistence are played out with dance, catchy songs and lots of laughs.
